Fish series inspired by a banknote
Inspiration is everywhere!
I was taken by these mackerel on a Scottish fiver, drew one of them in fine liner, and adapted and refined the picture into a series of characters and stamps over the course of a year.
I wanted to stylise this beautiful figure, and bring his vacant stare to life.
Keep scrolling to see how personality, charm, and emotion are developed…
Character development…
…the eyes are the window to the soul
…A sinister smirk…
A reassuring wink…
A benevolent smile…
A knowing look….
So much can be conveyed by adjusting mouth expression or eye shape
Anticipatory…
A fearful glance…
Shocked…
Breathing life…
My characters are developed in small sparkly ways in a sketchbook
I try to focus on how to grasp a sense of movement, motion, and character through mark making.
Here I wanted to create a friend come to the rescue, a sense of glee and anticipation…
Comparative studies help me focus on what I’m trying to express
A twinkle in the eye …
…the flutter of an eyelash…
… the swish of a tentacle…
… all in pursuit of making my creatures dynamic, wise, benevolent, withholding…
Here we have an octopus and a squid.
One is a lifeless study of shape, movement, light under water…
…the other is a snapshot of an angry, vindictive character with a furrowed brow…
